E-Mail this report to a friend

The Lok Sabha late last night approved the first part of the Union Budget for 2000-2001 with an assurance by Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha that he will consider the requests of the members to roll back the prices of food grains sold under the public distribution system and those of fertilisers.

The Congress, the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Communist Party of India-Marxist walked out of the House dissatisfied with the finance minister's reply.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham did not join the walkout.

Sinha said the sentiments of the coalition partners and Opposition will be kept in mind. .

In reply to the Budget debate, he said, ''I would like to assure that we shall keep these sentiments in mind. This need not have been part of the Budget. They are administered prices and could have been increased any time,'' he said.

''Let me make clear that the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) is not cracking up. The NDA is solid as a rock''.
