R S Shankar in Atlanta

Dating is common across America and, yet, for many Indian Americans dating causes a lot of embarrassment, even when they are dating desis.

So a seminar has been organised, 'Men are from Mumbai, women are from Delhi -- Dating in America: attitudes, perceptions, choices and challenges facing south Asian men and women of our generation.' Two well-known Atlanta-based groups, Raksha and Indian Professionals Network, have organized the free seminar on November 14 to discuss and explore the mystery of dating among the Indian Americans.

This topic is very relevant to young professionals of our generation, the organizers say.

"The forum will provide a unique opportunity to 'get it all on the table' and explore a number of relevant issues including the question, 'Are We Really that Different?' "

The seminar hopes to expose myths and stereotypes about dating, perceptions each group has about the other, factors feeding into these perceptions, influence of culture and social conditioning on dating and how Indian American men and women can understand each other better.

The November 14 event will be held from 1700 hours to 1900 hours at the Caribou Coffee in Buckhead, at 1784 Peach Tree Street.

The Raksha-IPN forum is intended to bring the two organizations closer by providing their members with an opportunity to discuss and explore a variety of social/cultural/political/religious issues of relevance to the current generation.
