Pappu Yadav remanded to 12 days in CBI custody

The Special Judicial Magistrate of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Kayum Khan today sent former Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav to CBI remand for 12 days in connection with the murder of Communist party of India-Marxist legislator Ajit Sarkar.

Yadav, arrested yesterday from his residence in Patna, was produced before the magistrate today. He was taken earlier to Fulwarisharif jail, but would be taken to New Delhi by CBI sleuths tomorrow for interrogation.

The counsel for Yadav pleaded that his client should not be let on CBI remand on the basis of Rajan Tiwari's statement alone. The latter, another accused in the case, is now lodged in Beur central jail.

The next date of producing Yadav before the court has been fixed for June 4.

Yadav was absconding for the last three months following an arrest warrant against him in the murder case.

The CBI had earlier announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 for any information on his whereabouts. Yadav reportedly was in hiding in Nepal and Delhi.

Sarkar was killed in a daylight shootout in Purnia on June 14 1998 while on his way home. A group of 12 people attacked him with sophisticated weapons.

The case was later handed over to the CBI after pressure from the CPM. The CBI made Yadav a prime accused along with Rajan Tiwari and others and had procured arrest warrants against them on March 6.
