India, Russia begin talks on crucial treaty

India's Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh has begun talks in Moscow with his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov and Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin on finalising a treaty between the two countries concerning long-term collaboration in defence, trade and economic affairs, the Voice of Russia said.

Concerted efforts towards seeking an end to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation air strikes on Yugoslavia, and talks on crucial international issues also form part of the agenda.

Singh, who arrived in Moscow yesterday after a brief visit to Ashkhabad, capital of the central Asian nation of Turkmenistan, will also finalise details regarding President Boris Yeltsin's visit to New Delhi later this year.

During Singh's stay in Ashkhabad, the two countries decided to set up a joint working group to decide the modalities for delivery of gas to India from Turkmenistan. Pakistan had also expressed willingness to be part of this venture.
