Congress wants security for key Rajiv murder witness

The Congress today demanded that the Centre provide full security to Ranganath who claims to know the main conspirators behind the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, and urged the Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency of the Union home ministry to carry out a speedy investigation into the case to bring the guilty to book.

A detailed resolution adopted at the Congress Working Committee took note of Ranganath's statement that he would disclose the names of persons involved in the dastardly crime, including the financiers of the operation, after he was acquitted by the Supreme Court.

The CWC emphasised the need to provide protection to Ranganath, who was sentenced to death by the TADA court for his involvement in the assassination but was however acquitted by the Supreme Court in its recent order in the case.

Pointing out that many crucial and important witnesses connected with the assassination had died mysteriously, the CWC said the government must immediately provide full security to Ranganath so that he could depose fearlessly.

Ranganath was charged with providing accommodation to Sivarasan, who had masterminded the assassination, at Konankunte, a suburb of Bangalore. Sivarasan committed suicide when the police surrounded the house.
