Erick de Mul, the United Nations coordinator for Afghanistan, will fly back to Kandahar on Thursday morning. He returned to his base in Islamabad on Tuesday after the UN decided to allow the Indian mission, the Taleban and the hijackers to resolve the hijack crisis themselves.

It is not clear why the UN has decided to rejoin the crisis management team in Kandahar. More details are awaited. De Mul could not be contacted in Islamabad.

His wife, Maria de Mul, however, told rediff.com that he is extremely busy and did not have the time to read even urgent fax messages and respond to e-mails since his return from Kandahar.

de Mul had successfully negotiated the release of diabetic passenger Anil Khurana on Sunday. Khurana is now convalescing in an Islamabad hospital.
