Mizo parties tie up for poll

The Mizo National Front and the Mizoram People's Conference, the two leading regional parties, have entered into an alliance to contest the assembly elections in November.

Under an agreement signed on Monday by Zoramthanga of the MNF and Brigadier T Sailo of the MPC, the two parties will field 10 candidates each in 20 selected constituencies. In the remaining 20 segments, their candidates will engage in "friendly contests", a joint press statement issued in Aizawl, the state capital, said.

If the two-party alliance succeeds in forming a coalition government, the leader of the forty-member house will be elected by the united legislature party. The deputy leader will then be from the other party.

Announcing this agreement to reporters at the Aizawl Press Club, MNF general secretary H Venlalauva and MPC general secretary J Lalthangliana said a joint manifesto spelling out the agenda and priorities of the alliance would be released soon.

They also said the constituencies where candidates will be fielded by both parties would be decided first. The selection of candidates for the rest of the seats will be done later by the nomination committees of the two parties.
