Python caught after road accident

A fire brigade team at the Central Ordnance Depot, Kandivli, in the western suburbs of Bombay, captured a snake they nearly ran over first.

The night patrol team was driving around the depot when one of the van's wheels ran over the animal's tail. The animal writhed in pain but wasn't very badly injured because the van had been moving slowly at the time and had done no major damage.

The three firemen and the driver made an makeshift noose with their ropes and caught the snake. The snake, weighing about 45-50 kg was later taken to a shed where it was securely tied up and kept under watch till the morning when the depot commandant C S Rathod was informed.

A snake-lover from nearby Borivli was called in, and he treated the snake's injury before handing it to the forest authorities.

Earlier, even foxes from the nearby forests had found their way into the COD premises, the security staff there said.

It is expected that the forest authorities will release the snake back into its domain, and it is hoped the snake will be a little more careful when crossing a road the next time.
