'India and Pakistan need skillful diplomacy'

K Natwar Singh

The second round of tests were expected from Pakistan. It is a situation created by the BJP government -- for India and the world. If Gohar Ayub Khan says that negotiations can only begin if Kashmir is placed on the agenda -- then I would say for talks to begin the prime ministers of India and Pakistan have to just pick up their phones and call each other. Why would they need Gohar Ayub Khan?

I would reiterate it all depends on diplomacy. The scope of talks between India and Pakistan have receded because of the events of the past two weeks. But Indian diplomats need to work to lower the temperature between the two countries.

We should send special emissaries to Pakistan. We have very competent diplomats -- the BJP has to just give them the required instructions and our diplomats will handle the challenges. But given the BJP, I doubt the party will give such instructions.
