Lalawia new Mizoram speakerR Lalawia was elected unopposed as Mizoram assembly speaker on Tuesday, the opening day of the newly constituted house. Congressman Zakhu Hlychho became the leader of opposition. The first session of the fourth Mizoram assembly started at 1030 hours with pro tem speaker L N Tluanga administering the oath of office to new members. After the ceremony, Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Hlychho escorted Lalawia, of the Mizo National Front, to the speaker's chair. The new speaker, who won from North Vanlaiphai, appealed to the members to maintain the decorum of the house. He promised impartiality, and said he would uphold the privileges and rights of all members. Hlychho assured the house of a constructive role from the opposition. The 40-member assembly has only six opposition members, all from the Congress. Mizoram Governor A Padmanabhan will address the session on December 9, an official spokesman said. UNI
