'Success or failure depends on the box office'

Chandrachur Singh He might not have too many hits to his name, but Chandrachur Singh is one hero who still manages to attract offers from big banners. His recent flops do not deter him and he says with confidence, "I believe in the power of God." Neither do his fans seem to be affected -- we saw many starstruck citizens pestering him for autographs and photographs on the sets of Mansoor Khan's Josh. In fact, Singh has a large crowd gathered around him as he spoke to rediff.com about his next release, Josh, and his expectations for the future…

Could you describe your role in Josh?

I can’t tell you much about my role. So I’ll only tell you that it is a normal, human one. I play a human being who has a conscience and character.

Can you at least tell us your expectations from the film?

I don’t want to expect anything from my film. It is, no doubt, a very well-made film. But success or failure, according to me, would just depend on the box office.

Chandrachur Singh What are the kind of films that you like to do?

I like to do commercial films. I know I started with Maachis, which was a little offbeat. But there are two reasons why I like to do commercial films: one, they have a wider reach and, two, their success ratio is much higher. As an actor, too, you are more wanted and liked if you are in commercial cinema.

But you haven’t really clicked as a commercial hero. Your last two releases, Dil Kya Kare and Silsila Hai Pyaar Ka didn’t do too well at the box office…

Yeah. But I believe a lot in the power of destiny. I think what has to happen will happen.

I believe there are three kinds of heroes -- the first begin their careers well and then go into a low phase, the second have a bad launch, go through a low phase and then emerge at the top. The third have a great start and then things only get better for them. I think there are a lot of things involved in becoming successful. I believe in doing my best and leaving the rest to God.

What are the future projects you are looking forward to?

As for my future, I have got Friends and Josh. Right now, I am being very selective about the kind of roles that I am doing. I want to take my own time before I decide upon any project.

Chandrachur Singh spoke to Kanchana Suggu.
