Nifty moves in narrow range, ends 2.5 points higher

Pivotals moved in a narrow range and registered marginal gains over its previous closing levels on the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 1006.65, touched the day's high of 1014.15, declined to the day's low of 1003.20 and later closed at 1008.80 points, showing a net gain of 2.50 points over the previous close of 1006.30 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 (Defty) Index increased by 0.30 points to 897.80 points over the previous close of 897.50 points. However, the midcap Index drifted lower by 6.20 points to 1137.60 points as against Friday's close of 1143.80 points.

The total turnover reported during the day was Rs 15.9 billion. ITC stood first in the list of turnover by recording highest business volume at Rs 9.5 billion, followed by SBI in Rs 1.7 billion, Tata Tea Rs 814.8 million and ACC Rs 23.69 million.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like Corp Bank Rs 221 million, Telco Rs 169.2 million, Castrol Rs 168 million, TISCO Rs 153.8 million, Colgate Rs 152.3 million, MTNL Rs 141.1 million, Hind Lever Rs 133.1 million, P&G Rs 91.8 million, B Auto Rs 82.1 million, Infosy Tech Rs 75.1 million, BHEL Rs 70.3 million, Britannia Rs 27.1 million, Siemens Rs 26.8 million, BSES Rs 25.8 million, L&T Rs 24.7 million, HPCL Rs 23.2 million, Sterlite Rs 19.8 million, Hindalco Rs 19.8 million, Satyam Comp Rs 19.7 million and LML Rs 17.9 million.

Among the gainers, HDFC Bank gained by 3.19 per cent to Rs 72.80, Tata Power increased by 2.97 per cent to Rs 103.95, Reliance up by 2.60 per cent to Rs 167.55, MRPL moved up by 2.14 per cent to Rs 19.10 while SBI in hardened by 2.11 per cent to Rs 217.60.

Among the losers, Essar Steel drifted lower by 2.25 per cent to Rs 15.20, Indogulf up by 2.10 per cent to Rs 35.00, Tata Chem decreased by 1.67 per cent to Rs 141.70, ABB moved down by 1.48 per cent to Rs 489.35 and Nestle declined by 1.47 per cent to Rs 248.15.
