Export growth slowed to 10.46% in Feb

EXIM
POLICY

Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran said on Saturday that export growth slowed to 10.46 percent in February, hit by a demand slowdown in the United States and Japan.

"There are some dark clouds on the horizon -- I mean, the demand constraints beyond our control like the apprehended slowdown of the two biggest economies, the US and Japan which account for 46 per cent of the world output," Maran said.

"Already the export growth rate for February (10.46 per cent) is somewhat indicative of this phenomena," Maran said, while unveiling the trade policy for 2001-02.

Exports grew 24.01 per cent in January 2001.

However, Maran said he was confident the country would achieve its 18 per cent export growth target for the financial year ended March 2001.
