Canadian trade delegation to visit India

Ajit Jain
India Abroad Correspondent in Toronto

After Canada decided to 're-engage' with India and lifted economic sanctions, Federal Minister for International Trade Pierre Pettigrew will embark on the first official visit to India as the head of a trade delegation.

The delegation is likely to comprise 100-150 representatives of Canadian companies and it will visit India from October 8 to October 12.

The visit is being handled by Team Canada Mission in the Prime Minister's Office in Ottawa in consultation with Pettigrew's office, informed sources say.

It will be a multi-sectoral trade delegation and will visit New Delhi, Madras and Bombay during its visit.

"This will be a great opportunity for your firm to gain profile and recognition as part of the Canadian team in India and travel with India oriented companies," said Murray Jans, executive director of Canada-India Business Council that receives partial financial help from the Department of Foreign Affairs and is mandated to promote trade between the two countries.

They have already started reaching out to their members so that they can register quickly. The reason being from all indications there's an enormous interest in this delegation.

"It is a new beginning of relationships between the two countries that are back on track now and they will go beyond and enhance the relationship" than what it prevailed before May 1998, Jans said.

The new message is "there's so much of untapped potential and businessmen have to cash that potential of Canada-India connection," he said with a great deal of optimism.

Canadian businessmen believe that Pettigrew visit is part of that "vanguard effort, very positive renewal of friendship again" and "we want to act like friends again," said Jans.

Pettigrew and members of the delegation will meet Indian Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran, Power Minister Suresh Prabhu and several other ministers, he stated.

A seminar on power and series of other discussions in India also have been organized, the C-IBC director stated.

The current trade between the two countries was at Cdn$1.7 million during 2000.
