Market@January 1: Day's report

Tech stocks witnessed high volatility on the first day of 2001. Global Tele, which had lost 5 per cent by the mid-session, recovered the entire decline in just 15 minutes. Zee Tele also dipped nearly 8 per cent but closed only 3 per cent lower. Other stocks also remained volatile.

Sensex down 16 points at 3956. Nifty down 8 points at 1256.

Meanwhile, old economy stocks remained firm. Stocks like Tisco, Tata Chem, ACC, L&T, SBI and Sterlite attracted strong buying interest.
