Zoellick, opening batsman in Indo-US relations: Blackwill

The new US ambassador to India Robert Blackwill on Thursday described visiting US Trade Representative Robert B Zoellick as an 'opening batsman', in Indo-US relations.

"Zoellick is our opening batsman. And as any opening batsman he is disciplined, confident, tenacious and extremely steady," he said in his first public address since taking over as the US ambassador emphasizing the importance US has placed on Indo-US bilateral relations.

Describing Zoellick as a man close to President Bush, he said that the USTR was bringing his problem solving ability to the Indo-US relationship, which is bound to have a positive impact on bilateral ties between the two countries.

Opening his address Zoellick quipped that Blackwill's description sounded more like a 'funeral oration', evoking much laughter among the audience.
