Sinha to present Budget at noon on Feb 29

Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha will present the fiscal budget for 2000/01 (April-March) to Parliament on February 29 at noon.

The Economic Survey, an annual report card of the economy, will be released on February 28.

The Union Cabinet has requested President K R Narayanan to convene the Budget Session of Parliament on February 23. This session, which would have a one-month recess, would end on May 17.

The President will address a joint meeting of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha -- the two houses of India's Parliament -- on the opening day of the session.

The Railway Budget for 2000-01 will be presented to Parliament on February 25.

(It was in 1999 that the Budget was presented in the morning for the first ever time. The earlier convention was to present it in the afternoon.)
