Markets@17 Feb: Day's report

Software and pharma in limelight.

Sensex up 109.67 points at 5835.17 points, Nifty at 1742.20 up by 31 points.

Wipro, Satyam, Silverline, Rolta, Sterlite and Dr. Reddy's hit upper circuit.

Software and pharma stocks saw a strong demand. Stocks like Wipro, Satyam Computer, Rolta and DSQ Software hit the upper circuit. Infosys too showed a 2.5 per cent higher close. Other software stocks also participated in the rally and showed handsome gains. Besides software, the pharma sector too remained in great demand throughout the day. A large number of leading pharma stocks hit the upper circuit. Cipla, Dr.Reddy's, Sun Pharma, E. Merck and Rhone Pulenc feature in this list.

Pivotals were also firm. ITC showed strong buying and posted a five per cent higher close. SBI, Reliance, Tisco and L&T also recorded positive close.

The Sensex opened at 5810.24 points and immediately slid to a low of 5799.99 points. The sentiment improved thereafter and it hit a peak of 5877.04 points before closing at 5835.17 points. The Nifty touched a peak of 1753.1 points. It touched a low of 1710.05 and closed at 1742.2 points. It closed 31 points higher than yesterday.

Silverline, DSQ Software, Sterlite, ICICI, Cipla, Computech, Satyam Computer, Rolta, Reliance Capital, Sun Pharma, Hoechst Marion, Escorts, Pfizer, Trent, Peerless Shipping, Hughes Software, Voltas, Polaris, Punjab Tractors, VJIL Consulting, Arvind Mills, Nicholas Piramal, Philips, Vans Info and HCL Technologies.

Stocks at lower circuit
Ojas Technologies, ITC Bhadrachalam, United Western Bank, BFL Software, City Lifts, Bhartiya International, Deltron Industries and United Breweries.

Stocks up over 5 per cent
Ranbaxy, Global Tele, HCL Infosys, Glaxo, BPL, Siemens, Century Textiles, Titan Industries, SCI, Mindteck, McDowell, EID Parry, Jupiter Orga, Crompton Greaves, Ace Software and MP Telelinks.

Stocks down over 5 per cent
Matsushita TV, Aplab, Essar Steel, Spic, Exide Industries, Scooters India, Pantaloon, Camlin, Widia, Kalyani Steel, BPL Engineering and Paper Products.
