Govt may allow voice over Net phone soon

The government is favourably disposed towards allowing voice over Internet phone soon, Minister for Communications Ram Vilas Paswan has said.

Paswan made this statement after formally inaugurating the Internet exchange and call centre at Jain Internet in New Delhi. The minister was responding to the plea made by J K Jain, chairman of Jain TV Group, that voice over Internet protocol should be allowed without any further delay.

Paswan said that the STD and PCO booths would also be converted into information kiosks in the near future.

While elaborating the present government's commitment to usher in the information technology revolution, the communications minister indicated that the voice over Internet phone plan is under the active consideration of the government.

However, he was constrained in making a categorical announcement on the subject because of the ongoing Parliament session.
