Market@7 April: Day's report

With positive news from all fronts, the market opened with a huge gap and gained further ground. All the top software stocks hit the upper circuit at the open and remained there for a major part of the day.

Later, the buying spread to non-software stocks. Reliance, HLL, ITC, Telco, Ranbaxy, MTNL, and HPCL recorded handsome gains, and helped the Sensex. Reliance, Himachal, Satyam, HLL and Zee topped the volume chart accounting for 38 per cent of total trading volume on the BSE. Trading volume remained low as most of the stocks in demand were at the upper circuit.

Sensex gained 354 points at 5222. Nifty was up 104 points at 1557.

Stocks at lower circuit
Odyssey Techno, Core Health, Bhartiya International, Excel Ind, Gordon Herb, STC India.

Stocks up over 5 per cent
HLL, ITC, Reliance, Colgate, IPCL, HDFC, Tata Chem, Hindalco, Philips, Century Crompton Greaves, Rhone Poulenc, Finolex Cables, KEC International, Henkel Spic, Kerala Ayurveda, Indo Castle.

Stocks down over 5 per cent
Agro Dutch, Himalaya Int, Wall St Finance, Hotline Tele, Fidelity, IG Petro, Jindal Hotel, Ahmednagar Forging, Madhur Foods.
