New management course for wives of business big-wigs

The first management course for wives of businessmen which aims at developing the considerable latent talent within business families will be launched by the Acme Centre of Management Excellence in New Delhi in July this year.

"It's a mission for women's empowerment. We are not looking at it from any other angle," Acme Centre's president G N Gandhi, a professor at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, said.

He said many of the women, with school-going children, economically stable backgrounds and sufficient time on their hands, will find the business management programme enriching, fulfilling and empowering.

The centre, which will open admissions for the course later this month, will provide a one-year, full-time post-graduate diploma programme in business management with special focus on international business.

Acme will initially target womenfolk in the age group of 30 to 40 years among the more than 10,000 business families that reside in Noida and Ghaziabad areas, Gandhi said.

The centre has dovetailed all the important aspects of a full 2-year MBA programme into a one-year programme knowing that members of most business families cannot spare two whole years.

The All-India Council of Technical Education is expected to accord recognition to the programme although it is not exactly required since it is a one-year course.

The goal of this business management programme is to train the educated wives of these families to support the family business or help in diversification or expansion. No one so far has attempted such a programme, Gandhi said.

The Acme Centre has top-class faculty and a distinguished advisory board that includes bureaucrats like former Delhi governor Tejendra Khanna, telecom secretary Shyamal Ghosh, and Pritam Singh.

Gandhi said he would also approach eminent women personalities like Shabana Azmi and Kiran Bedi to be members of the board.

The programme, Gandhi said, will offer a unique combination of courses: general management, international business, entrepreneurship, finance and accounts, marketing, business information technology, foreign language, and personal grooming and finishing.

Strong emphasis will be given to teaching about the international business environment, international marketing management, research in management, international marketing logistics, international financial management, legal aspects of international business, and management information systems.
