Pivotals make moderate recovery; Nifty up 16 points to 1399.50

Pivotals recovered moderately on buying support from the local operators on the first day of the new settlement as optimistic sentiment prevailed at the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the firm trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index opened at 1385.55 points, touched the day's high of 1413.45 points, a low of 1385.55 points before closing at 1399.50 points, showing a net gain of 16.25 points from the previous close of 1383.25 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior shot up by 43.85 points to 2534.65 points from the previous close of 2490.80 points. The S&P CNX Defty ended higher by 13.30 points to 1115.45 points. The S&P CNX 500 and CNX Midcap 200 also went up by 15.80 and 16.60 points to 993.95 points and 914.55 points respectively.

The NSE registered total turnover of Rs 24.07 billion during the day. Today, 757 securities advanced, 393 declined, 51 remained unchanged while 169 securities hit their price bands today.

Ranbaxy registered the highest turnover with Rs 3.41 billion, followed by Reliance Rs 2.06 billion, Satyam Computers Rs 1.75 billion, Pentafour Software Rs 1.44 billion and Silverline Rs 866.8 million.

The other actively traded scrips were SBI (Rs 854.9 million), HCL-HP (Rs 774.1 million), Telco (Rs 637.8 million), ITC (Rs 581.2 million), Tisco (Rs 556.4 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 536.6 million), L&T (Rs 525.5 million), Sterlite (Rs 467.3 million), Rolta (Rs 462.3 million), MTNL (Rs 443.5 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 407.2 million), BPL (Rs 394.2 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 337.8 million), Videocon International (Rs 322.7 million), ACC (Rs 316.7 million), Reliance Petroleum (Rs 316.1 million), Apollo Tyres (Rs 262.9 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 261.6 million), Square D Software (Rs 255 million) and Tata Tea (Rs 188.9 million).

The major gainers were HDFC Bank Rs 98.35 (Rs 91.05), Reliance Petroleum Rs 45.55 (Rs 43.75), Infosys Technologies Rs 5988.35 (Rs 5756.70), BSES Rs 212.00 (Rs 204.20) and East Indian Hotel Rs 285.30 (Rs 275.20) while the major losers were Tisco Rs 154.90 (Rs 160.95), Asian Paints Rs 384.05 (Rs 390.05), Grasim Rs 423.40 (Rs 430.00), Tata Tea Rs 563.30 (Rs 571.60) and L&T Rs 387.85 (Rs 392.90).
