Infotech, ITC gain; FIs dip; Nifty up 7.5 points, 1060.65

Market opened on a buoyant note and continued to remain up till the mid-session. However, it declined sharply towards the fag-end of trading on heavy unloading by bull operators today.

Reflecting the trend, the S&P CNX Nifty index opened at 1078.20 points, touched the day's high of 1088.55 points, a low of 1057.75 points before closing at 1060.65 points, showing a net gain of 7.50 points as against the previous close of 1053.15 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior moved down by 20.10 points to 1988.00 points from the previous close of 1967.90 points.

The S&P CNX Defty ended lower by 5.80 points to 866.30 points as against the previous close of 860.50 points.

The S&P CNX-500 and CNX Midcap-200 eased by 5.20 and 9.26 points to 741.94 and 667.63 points as against the previous close of 734.74 and 658.37 points respectively.

Total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was Rs 36.56 billion from a trading of 94.53 million shares in 333,022 trades. Debentures traded were valued at Rs 2.92 million.

Today, 710 securities advanced, 361 declined, 77 unchanged and 168 securities hit their price bands.

Pentafour software topped the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 7.20 billion, Satyam Computer Rs 6.52 billion, ITC Rs 4.60 billion, Silverline Rs 1.79 billion, SBI Rs 1.62 billion, HCL-HP Rs 1.43 billion and Square D Software Rs 1.22 billion.

Other actively traded counters were Rolta (Rs 998.1 million), Tata Tea (Rs 995.3 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 801.6 million), Ranbaxy (Rs 783.4 million), Reliance (Rs 776.8 million), Infosys Technologies (Rs 634.9 million), Global Telesystems (Rs 536.2 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 524.8 million), L&T (Rs 461.2 million), Telco (Rs 289.7 million), ACC (Rs 258.8 million), MTNL (Rs 233.3 million), Tisco (Rs 224.3 million), BHEL (Rs 214.9 million), Hindustan Lever (Rs 200.6 million), Glaxo (Rs 171.1 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 155.1 million) and NIIT (Rs 146 million).

The top gainers were IFCI Rs 11.60 (10.50), Tata Chemicals Rs 75.90 (70.25), ICICI Rs 45.90 (42.50), Ranbaxy Rs 559.55 (518.10), Hindustan Petroleum Rs 188 (175). The top losers were Global Telesystems whic closed at Rs 466.00 (488.20), SBI new Rs 209.40 (219), East India Hotels Rs 204.25 (212), NIIT Rs 2120.10 (2200) and India Hotel Rs 322 (330).
