The Stock Exchange, Bombay

Sensex closes at 5015, Nifty at 1503, rupee 43.51

The stock markets in India opened on a firm note on Thursday morning as pivotals and infotech stocks led a rally.

The Bombay Stock Exchange, India's premier bourse, witnessed brisk trading. The BSE Sensex, the 30-share benchmark index, surged past the psychological barrier of 5,000 and touched 5,090 in intra-day trading. At 1445 hours IST, the index was at 5015, up 66 points or 1.33 per cent from Wednesday's close of 4949.

Trading at the National Stock Exchange was suspended due to technical problems. The S&P CNX Nifty closed at 1481 on Wednesday.

The Indian rupee was steady at 43.52 to the US dollar, down two paise, in early deals.

The Sensex closed at 5015, Nifty at 1503 and rupee at 43.51.
