Upbeat market pushes Nifty up over 20 points, 887.10

Equities rose on upbeat market sentiments, as pivotals witnessed brisk trading at the National Stock Exchange in Bombay today.

The S&P CNX Nifty opened at 866.90 points, saw a high of 889.45 points and a low of 866.90 points, closing at 887.10 points from the previous close of 866.50 points, showing a net gain of 20.60 points.

The CNX Nifty Junior ended at 1485.05 points from the last close of 1468.15 points, gaining 16.90 points. The S&P CNX Defty ended at 722.35 points, rising by 16.95 points. The S&P CNX 500 closed at 603.06 points, gaining 12.39 points. The CNX Midcap 200 ended at 521.53 points, showing an increase of 7.66 points.

The total turnover was Rs 13.57 billion from 61.30 million shares. About 45 securities hit their price bands today.

ITC recorded the highest turnover at Rs 2.45 billion followed by Satyam Computer (Rs 1.68 billion), SBI (Rs 1.49 billion), Reliance (Rs 1.29 billion), Pentafour (Rs 1.16 billion) and Zee Telefilms (Rs 982 million).

The other scrips registering a high turnover were Tata Tea, Castrol, MTNL, ACC, Silverline and L&T.

The gainers today were HDFC Bank, BPCL, SBI, East India Hotel, Tata Tea while prominent among those that shed value were MRPL, Glaxo and ITC.

Financial institutions and mutual funds offloaded Rs 718.4 million worth shares while FIIs sold to the tune of Rs 58.6 million.
