GeoLogistics Limited, subsidiary of GeoLogistics Corporation, Denver, the USA, one of the world's largest global logistics companies with revenues of $ 1.6 billion, has commenced operations in 15 Indian cities this week.

GeoLogistics will offer to Indian customers multimodal end-to-end freight forwarding and warehousing facilities in dozens of international destinations, and advanced supply chain management.

The company will also offer a single window service for air, sea and global distribution services and time-definite delivery of freight to all of the 1000 global destinations across 75 countries it serves.

Roger E. Payton, president and CEO, GeoLogistics Corp, said, ''India is a vital market for us. For Indian exporters seeking to tap highly competitive global markets, our reliability and our global reach translate into competitive advantage.''

The company has operations in Bombay, New Delhi, Madras, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Kanpur, Bangalore, Varanasi, Cochin, Trivandurm, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Baroda and Bhadohi.

According to Andrew Birtley, CEO of GeoLogistics India, the Indian user is still not very familiar with the advantages of outsourcing a comprehensive supply chain management function. He said he will focus on spreading awareness about freight forwarding services and integrated logistics.

India spends upwards of 12 per cent of GDP on transport and logistics, compared to under ten per cent in developed countries, largely because of its poor infrastructure, and inefficiencies in inventory management.

GeoLogistics' global business is focussed on electronics and office automation, pharmaceuticals, retailing, automobile components, defence and aerospace, and telecommunications. This focus will characterise the Indian operation as well.

Electronic networks are now under construction to fully integrate the Indian operation into GeoLogistics global electronic network to facilitate online control including track and trace.
