Nifty defies Tuesday tradition, moves up on FII support; 868.70

Pivotals firmed up furtner on good buying support by foreign institutional investors, domestic institutions and bull operators on the last day of the current settlement on the National Stock Exchange today.

Reflecting the uptrend, the S&P CNX Nifty moved up by 4.05 points to 868.70 points from 864.65 points of the previous day.

The CNX Nifty Junior shot up by 16.05 points to 1448.15 points and S&P CNX Defty edged up by 3.25 points to 711.90 points.

The S&P CNX 500 index gained 3.36 points to 591.13 points while CNX Midcap-200 index advanced by 3.79 points to 518.88 points.

Total turnover involving 57.79 million shares in 179,702 trades was Rs 12.44 billion and the turnover in debentures was Rs 6.22 million.

About 546 securities gained, 486 lost and 104 remained unchanged. And 39 securities hit their price bands today.

The net investment by FIIs was worth Rs 136.2 million while that of the domestic institutions was Rs 4.72 million.

The top gainers were: Indian Rayon (Rs 115.45 from Rs 106.90), Cochin Refineries (Rs 141.95 from Rs 133), HDFC Bank (Rs 55 from Rs 51.85), ICICI (Rs 50.85 from Rs 47.95) and IDBI (Rs 42.50 from Rs 40.45).

The top losers were P&G (Rs 741.45 from Rs 757.35), IPCL (Rs 61.80 from Rs 62.95), HPCL (Rs 272.15 from Rs 276.10), Reliance Petro (Rs 17.70 from Rs 17.95) and MTNL (Rs 193.70 from Rs 196.40).

ITC registered the highest turnover of Rs 1.90 billion, followed by Pentafour Software (Rs 1.59 billion), Satyam Computer (Rs 1.52 billion), Reliance (Rs 1.09 billion), SBI New (Rs 882.5 million), Zee Telefilms (Rs 759.3 million), Castrol (Rs 620.6 million), Telco (Rs 397.1 million), BHEL (Rs 292.4 million), HCL-HP (Rs 276.7 million), ACC (Rs 266 million), L&T (Rs 169.4 million) and ICICI (Rs 169.1 million).

The other actively traded counters were: Tata Tea (Rs 156.2 million), MTNL (Rs 152.9 million), Tisco (Rs 141.9 million), Software Solutions International (Rs 115.8 million), Digital Equipment (Rs 98.6 million), Dr Reddy's (Rs 87 million), BFL Software (Rs 83.1 million), Raymond (Rs 77.8 million) and Infosys Tech (Rs 64 million).

The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed trades worth Rs 47.77 million. The 11.98 per cent government loan maturing in 2004 was traded for Rs 400 million at a weighted yield of 12 per cent. The zero coupon government bond maturing in 2000 (Series I) was traded for Rs 350 million at a weighted yield of 10.86 per cent.

Commercial paper of MRF Limited was traded for Rs 500 million at a weighted yield of 10.79 per cent. Two repo trades worth Rs 650 million were translated at a repo rate of 8.75 per cent for 14 days. The turnover in debentures today was 87.04 million.
