NSE-50 Index

Nifty loses 28.7 points

Pivotal prices declined sharply on hectic profit taking by the bull operators and domestic financial institutions on the National Stock Exchange today.

The NSE-50 index opened at 1210.25 points, rose slightly to 1211.25 points, touched a day's low of 1179.75 points before closing at 1182.10 points, suffering a loss of 28.70 points as against the previous close of 1210.80 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 finished at 1031.90 points over its last trading day's close of 1056.50 points, decreasing 24.60 points. The Midcap index settled down at 1647.85 points as compared to yesterday's close of 1697.00 points losing 49.15 points.

The total turnover on the exchange was Rs 14.3 million involving 67.2 million shares in 230,455 trades. About 166 securities have hit their price bands. Nearly 172 scrips improved further, 977 lost marginally, and 60 scrips remained unchanged.

In the National Depository Service Limited segment the traded value was Rs 56.4 million, comprising 819,000 shares in 230 trades.

ITC registered the highest volume of business with Rs 2.5 billion followed by RIL Rs 1.8 billion, SBI-N Rs 864.4 million, Satyam Comp Rs 689.3 million, LML Rs 647.9 million, Tata Tea Rs 454.9 million, Castrol Rs 452.8 million, ACC Rs 449 million, ICICI Rs 417.1 million, Glaxo Rs 383.5 million, Tisco Rs 372.8 million, Telco Rs 309.2 million, Pentsfware Rs 275.1 million.

Among other active scrips were escorts (Rs 228.1 million), Infosystch (Rs 209.8 million), Sterlite (Rs 203.9 million), Hind Lever (Rs 194.1 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 173.2 million), Digital Equip (Rs 126.6 million), Nestle (Rs 123.1 million), BHEL (Rs 122.6 million), NIIT (Rs 120.1 million), Tata Chem (Rs 105.4 million), BPL (Rs 104.8 million) and L and T (Rs 103 million).

The gainers: BPCL rose to Rs 409.25 from Rs 401.35. Ind Rayon shot up to Rs 232.15 from Rs 231.55, ACC hardened to 1551.70 from Rs 1551.50; and losers: ICICI came down to Rs 106.80 from Rs 114.40, Arvind Mills declined to Rs 73.55 from Rs 78.65, ABB decreased to 598.55 from Rs 639.50, Tata Power to Rs 113.10 from Rs 120.70 and Cochin Ref to Rs 245.75 from Rs 262.20.
