12 killed in militant attack in Poonch

Twelve people -- eight Border Security Force personnel, one Indian Reserve Police personnel, one Special Police Officer and two children -- were killed and 24 injured when militants threw grenades and opened indiscriminate fire at a bus stand in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday afternoon.

The militants struck around 1415 hours (IST) at the bus stand, which is close to the place where a Congress rally being attended by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, AICC general secretary Ambika Soni and state party president Ghulam Nabi Azad was on, official sources said.

Soon after the attack the Congress leaders where whisked away to safer places, the sources said.

The injured have been hospitalised and those in critical condition were being airlifted to government medical college hospital in Jammu.

Security personnel have cordoned off the area and a hunt was on for the militants.
