Pakistan is trying to push in more militants into Jammu and Kashmir, the Border Security Force said on Thursday.
BSF Inspector General of Police G S Gill said 41 encounters were witnessed on the Line of Control since July 19 in which 90 militants were killed.
The infiltration attempts were aimed at sabotaging the assembly election in the valley, he said.
He said there was a phase when infiltration had declined temporarily, but the BSF had anticipated an increase after a speech by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in May. He said the 'enemy was reconsolidating [its position in the valley]'.
He expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the assembly election, but regretted the loss of lives of 12 BSF personnel in two militant attacks in south Kashmir.
"We were fearing improvised explosive device attacks in south Kashmir and we had taken precautions. The incident in Tral, where five BSF men were killed, was caused by a huge IED," he said.
