India v Sri Lanka: Repeat Final

  • Scorecard | Match report | Images
  • West Indian Steve Bucknor became the third umpire to officiate in 100 or more LOI matches. The others to do so are England's David Shepherd (113 matches) and New Zealand's Steve Dunne (100).

  • Sachin Tendulkar was appearing in his 300th LOI match since his debut in 1989. He becomes the fourth player to reach this milestone in LOIs. The others being: Paksitani Wasim Akram (343 matches), Indian Mohammad Azharudin (334) and Australian Steve Waugh (325).

  • Meanwhile Muttiah Muralitharan became the fifth Sri Lankan and the 28th player in LOIs to reach the landmark of 200 matches. He made his debut in 1993.

  • Mahela Jayawardene was appearing in his 98th consecutive LOI match. Jayawardene, who was appearing in his 118 match overall, has not missed a match since missing the opening tie in the 1999 World Cup against England at Lord's on 14-5-1999. He appeared in the next match against South Africa at Northampton on 19-5-1999 and since then has appeared in 98 matches in a row. This is now a Sri Lankan record bettering the previous best of 96 consecutive matches by Sanath Jayasuriya (from 10-3-1993 to 7-4-1997) and Aravinda deSilva (from 3-8-1994 to 24-1-1998).

  • The partnership of 118 runs between Mahela Jayawardene and Russel Arnold was the best for the 5th wicket in this competition since 1998. The pair bettered the previous best of 95 runs between the Kiwi pair of Craig McMillan and Roger Twose against Zimbabwe at Nairobi on 9-10-2000.

  • The above partnership between Jayawardene and Arnold was Sri Lanka's best for the 5th wicket at this ground bettering the previous best of 110 runs between Marvan Atapattu and Arnold against New Zealand on 25-7-2001.

  • Zaheer Khan's three wickets has taken his tally of wicket in this championship to 15 in 9 matches. He now equals the tally held by South African Jacques Kallis in 8 matches. Now both Kallis and Zaheer have the maximum number of wickets by a bowler in this tournament since 1998.

  • This was the only fifth time in his career, spanning 291 innings, Tendulkar went in at the batting position of number three. He aggregates just 56 runs at a batting average of 14.00 in this position. His highest score remains as 21 against South Africa at East London on 19-12-1992. The last time he went in at this position was also against Sri Lanka at Goa on 28-12-1997, while scoring six runs!

  • The 2002 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy became the only second tournament to be shared in LOI history. Interestingly, the first took place recently, when the three-nation tournament title at Nairobi between Australia and Pakistan on 7-9-2002 had to shared, since rain interupted play and the match was declared as 'no-result'.

  • The Premadasa final was India's 37th tournament final. They have won 18 titles but have lost in a final on 18 occasions.

  • It was the seventh tournament final for Sourav Ganguly as captain. He has so far won just one - the Natwest Trophy - against England at Lord's on 13-7-2002.

  • The match was Sri Lanka's 29th tournament final. They have won 15 titles but have lost in a final on 13 occasions.
