Statistical highlights (3rd day) at Bangalore

-- Sachin Tendulkar's 90, while missing his 28th Test hundred and 51st first-class hundred, was his fourth score in the nineties in 143 innings and 89 matches. He now joins Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Rahul Dravid among other Indians with four scores in the nineties. However, Tendulkar is one short of the Indian record of five such scores by Sunil Gavaskar. Tendulkar now has scores in the nineties against Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa and now England.

-- Incidentally, Tendulkar, who already has one hundred at this venue, now becomes the first batsman to register a 90 on two occasions at Bangalore. He also had a 96 against Sri Lanka in January 1994.

-- This was the first time in his 89 Test match career and in 143 innings and 128 dismissals, Tendulkar was dismissed "stumped". Tendulkar before this dismissal was progressing towards the record of Pakistani Salim Malik who in 154 innings and 133 dismissals has the distinction never being stumped in Tests. With this Tendulkar dismissal, Chandu Borde, among Indian batsmen holds the record in 97 innings and 87 dismissals without a stumping. However it seems Tendulkar's teammate Rahul Dravid in 92 innings and 82 dismissals will supercede Borde by playing maximum innings without being dismissed stumped. For the record at the other end of the scale, Australian Allan Border has been dismissed "stumped" on maximum occasions - nine!

-- During the course of his above innings Tendulkar when on 87, became the fifth batsman to aggregate 1000 runs in Tests during the calendar year of 2001. Australian Matthew Hayden (1250 runs in 13 matches), West Indian Brian Lara (1151 runs in 9), South African Herschelle Gibbs (1089 runs in 12) and Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene (1035 in 12) were the others to so this year. Tendulkar now has 1003 runs (avg. 62.68) in 10 matches. With still one more innings remaining Tendulkar could extend his run aggregate for this year. Incidentally, this was the third time in his career Tendulkar was aggregating over 1000 runs in a calendar year. In 1997 he had made exactly 1000 runs (avg. 62.50) in 12 matches and in 1999 he had 1088 runs (avg. 68.00) in 10 matches.

-- Matthew Hoggard's 3-65 was statistically his best bowling figures of his Test career in his 5th match. His previous best figures was the 3-79 against Pakistan at Manchester in May-June this year.
