Statistical highlights (1st day) at Bangalore

-- AV Jayaprakash became the first Indian umpire in 13 years to officiate in back to back Test matches in a the same series in India. The last one to do so was Ram Babu Gupta against New Zealand in successive matches at Bombay and Hyderabad in November and December 1988.

-- For the first time in 12 Test matches England has retained the same eleven from their previous match. Marcus Trescothick, incidentally is the only player to appear in all the 13 matches.

-- Sarandeep Singh was making a comeback to the side after missing 12 Test matches since his debut against Zimbabwe at Nagpur in November last year.

-- With both Harbhajan Singh and Sarandeep Singh playing in this Test, it was the first time in 12 years, India had the services to two genuine off-spinners in same Test match. India had played Arshad Ayub and M Venkataramana against West Indies at Kingston in April 1989. Just for the record, the famous off-spinning pair of EAS Prasanna and S Venkataraghavan had appeared together in 15 Test matches from 1967 to 1976.

-- The first time floodlights were used in a Test match was in the Perth match on November 20, 1997 when lights were put on during Australia's innings against New Zealand late in the afternoon, which was the first day of the Test. Now for the first time in Test cricket history at Bangalore a match began with the floodlights on and also for the first time in Tests an entire day was played under lights.

-- The partnership of 47 runs between Mark Butcher and Naseer Hussain was England's best for the second wicket at this venue bettering the previous best of 46 runs by one run between Geoff Boycott and Chris Tavare in December 1981.

-- The partnership of 113 runs between Michael Vaughan and Mark Ramprakash was England's best for any wicket at this ground bettering the previous best of 88 between Boycott and Graham Gooch for the first wicket in December 1981. The pair also bettered England's best for the fourth wicket at this venue bettering the previous best of an unbeaten 22 runs between David Gower and Keith Fletcher in December 1981.

-- Vaughan, who was given out "handled the ball" under Law 33.1, became the seventh player and the second Englishman in Test cricket history to be dismissed in this manner.
