Much ado about very little?

Claims made by various Federal Ministers that unaccounted income worth thousands of crores had been seized from the homes of various cricketers fell flat when the Income Tax department claimed that a total of Rs 25,000 was all the cash that had been seized from cricketers' homes in course of the nationwide raids carried out last month.

Jewellery worth Rs 1.2 million, and other assets worth Rs 93,000, were also seized from the homes of the seven cricketers who were subjected to raids.

Further, Kapil Dev stands accused of undervaluing his home by Rs one crore. Navjot Singh Sidhu has been found to have concealed a total of Rs 6.5 million which he claims were given to him as gifts. And Manoj Prabhakar is understood to have numerous bank accounts, the contents of which are under scrutiny.

Jagmohan Dalmiya's assets grew, in course of one accounting year, from Rs 7,70,000 to Rs 11 crore. The former ICC chairman, however, has claimed that his income tax returns are clear.

Sangeeta Bijlani, wife of Mohammad Azharuddin, has been found to have Rs 2.19 crore by way of unaccounted-for monetary transactions.

Karan Dubey, a close associate of Kapil Dev, has seven companies in his name, details of which are being investigated.

Meanwhile, cash worth Rs 3.17 million and jewellery worth Rs 2.5 million were seized from various bookies whose office premises were raided at the same time.
