At a meeting of the Bimal Jalan Committee recently, issues such as the participation of the Indian Railways and the Power Grid Corporation in long-distance leased circuits and the requirement of bandwidth for the National Information Infrastructure were also discussed.

The view of the Department of Telecommunications, as expressed in the meeting, was that the Railways and the Power Grid Corporation need not directly compete with the DoT. The railways and the power grid authorities, however, appear keen to operate services independent of the DoT.

It has, however, been decided that in principle, the three government entities would work together to create the NII.

Prime Minister I K Gujral is understood to have taken special interest in the matter and wants the issues resolved as soon as possible, it is learnt.
