Network issue goes to sub-panelThe issue of the participation of the Indian Railways and the Power Grid Corporation in operating long-distance leased data networks, which is under consideration of a committee under Dr Bimal Jalan, member-secretary, Planning Commission, has been referred to a sub-committee of joint secretaries. The sub-committee will comprise representatives of the Railways, Power Grid, Department of Telecommunications and Planning Commission. The report of the sub-committee will be considered by the Dr Jalan Committee
At a meeting of the Bimal Jalan Committee recently, issues such as the participation of the Indian Railways and the Power Grid Corporation in long-distance leased circuits and the requirement of bandwidth for the National Information Infrastructure were also discussed. The view of the Department of Telecommunications, as expressed in the meeting, was that the Railways and the Power Grid Corporation need not directly compete with the DoT. The railways and the power grid authorities, however, appear keen to operate services independent of the DoT. It has, however, been decided that in principle, the three government entities would work together to create the NII. Prime Minister I K Gujral is understood to have taken special interest in the matter and wants the issues resolved as soon as possible, it is learnt. |
