Government sets up CAD-CAM centre in MadrasThe union government and the Tamil Nadu state government will together contribute Rs 490 million towards the setting up of a computer-aided design and manufacturing and tooling centre to be located in Madras. The centre will be a common facility for small and medium-scale "metal forming" industries. It is expected to be especially useful to the ancillary units of the various large automobile manufacturers setting up facilities. The installed production annual capacity of the new centre is estimated at Rs
Apart from providing design assistance and common service facilities to industrial units, the centre will also conduct regular training programmes. V S Karunakaran, director, Small Industries Service Institute, told reporters that the union government would contribute Rs 342.1 million out of the project cost of Rs 478.9 million. While this amount would be in the form of machinery, the state government would provide the land and building required for the centre. The facility will also be open to industries from other states, Karunakaran informed. Even though most of the capital investment is being made by the government, the centre itself will be run by a non-profit company managed by an industry association. A new association, named the Tamil Nadu Metal Forming Manufacturers Association, has been created for the purpose. The association has undertaken to meet all the working capital needs of the centre after the end of 20 months. The company, formed to run the centre, would have directors from both the industry and the government. It would, however, have the freedom to hire employees - including a chief executive - on a contract basis, Karunakaran said. |
