Infosys sets up shop in Madras

The centre, the company's fourth outside Bangalore, has been operational for about six months now, with about 130 professionals. It has the capacity to accommodate 250 professionals.

the outskirts of Madras," said Chairman and Managing Director N R Narayana Murthy. He expects the total strength of Infosys in Madras to be over 1,000 by July 1998.

Infosys is talking with the Tamil Nadu government for land acquisition and other infrastructure for the facility.

The investment in the present facility has been Rs 75 million and the planned outlay for the new centre is Rs 300 million, according to T V Mohandas Pai, senior vice-president (finance and administration).

The nearly 27,000 square feet facility is equipped with about 150 PCs and two servers and is linked through a 64 Kbps point-to-point link to its Bangalore headquarters. A direct 64 Kbps link to their office in Fremont, US, is also planned.

"We are doing fresh projects from Madras, but all activities (mainly offshore development) happening at the Bangalore facility will happen here too," said P Seshan who will be heading the Madras centre.

Clients serviced by the Madras centre are J C Penny, J B Hunt, T J Max and Apple Computers, all US-based companies.

"We hope to achieve $2 million in revenues for the first year," said Seshan, while Pai aimed at $8-10 million per annum in the following years.

The services offered by Infosys are fixed price turnkey projects, offshore software maintenance, porting/reengineering projects and Y2K projects which along with its products such as BANCS 2000 (a bank automation software) and Websetup (a Web application builder) will be available through its Madras centre.

Infosys, which was set up in 1981, has its headquarters at Bangalore, where the development centre, spread over 160,000 square feet, has a 3,000-node LAN with 60 hubs and 50 servers with seven 64 Kbps link and a 256 Kbps satellite link.

Apart from the Madras centre, Infosys has facilities in Pune, Bhubaneshwar and Mangalore.
