Q1 PC shipment trends

PC desktop shipments with less than 8 MB RAM were negligible at 2.3 per cent while 8 MB RAM desktops stood at 34.4 per cent.

RAM desktops would be close to negligible in the next quarter.

Another trend noticed is that 81.3 per cent of PC desktops shipped through dealer channels in Q1 1997-98 had hard disk capacities greater than 1 GB. This is in contrast to the same quarter last year when only 13.4 per cent of shipments had hard disk capacities greater than 1 GB.

Another study by IDC (India) indicates that the growth of IT spending in the small office segment will outperform the middle and large segments of the domestic market.

Of the 400,000 active small offices in the country, only 19 per cent have some form of computerisation. With this current penetration, IDC (India) estimates the average number of PCs at 1.2 per organisation. The small office segment, by virtue of this low PC penetration and expected high growth in IT spending, represents a vast untapped market segment for PC vendors.
