Email this story to a friend. All central ministries and departments have been instructed to prepare a five-year plan on information technology with provision of up to 3 per cent of their budget outlay.

Pant has said that the government aims at accelerating the process of ensuring that no section of society is excluded from this process.

He says the information revolution has the potential to reduce disparities between nations but asymmetric access to its benefits by different sections of society could have far reaching social and economic implications.

He has said the government is fully aware of the problem and for this purpose the National Task Force on Information Technology and Software Development was set up.

The deputy chairman has said the ambitious export targets in information technology can be reached only by increasing the compound growth rate from 55 per cent to 80 per cent per annum.

He said the country should aim at an export target of $50 billion for computer software and related services by 2008. The target for computer and telecommunication hardware for the period should be $10 billion.

Pant said India should establish its presence in interrelated areas of networking after having made a mark in the field of software.

Information technology has the potential of being the largest employer in the country. For future growth, widespread dispersal of information technology within the country is required, he said.
