Paswan meets senior telecom officers

Addressing a one-day heads of telecom circles conference in New Delhi, Paswan said all villages in the country would be provided with telephone facilities latest by the 2002.

Stating that steps have been initiated to strengthen the national backbone route with optical fibre network to expand Internet connections, he said that there would be one Internet node in every district by 2000.

Paswan said transparency in administration and responsiveness to customers' needs should percolate down to the grassroots to bring about radical change in the image of the department.

"Greater cost consciousness and a financial return oriented approach are imperatives that will help generate more resources internally as well as help fulfil our objectives much easier," he said.

Commenting on the quality of service and faster rectification of faults, the minister said complaints should be attended to within three hours and most of the faults should be cleared within 24 hours.

The grievance cell in the minister's office is to monitor all complaints. Paswan told the CGMs to also monitor performance in this regard.

"Unless we take some bold and innovative initiatives to improve our customer services we are likely to be left behind in this competitive environment. It is with this view the telecom groups in rural and urban telecom services have been created for improving telecom services," he added.
