Dell Japan picks Infosys for e-commerce jobDell Computer Japan has said it has selected Bangalore based Infosys Technologies to provide custom development for the company's online commerce applications. This move is in line with Dell's e-commerce strategy that calls for Dell and its subsidiaries to be able to conduct 50 per cent of all business online by 2000.
Dell Computer Japan, a subsidiary that was established in 1993, has adopted the sales model of the parent company. Dell Japan is the second largest of the Dell subsidiaries behind the UK. Since its inception, Dell Japan has employed "order manufacturing" which involves manufacturing custom-made PCs to meet user specifications. George Mora, online services manager responsible for all online operations for Dell Japan, said Infosys was selected for an initial project involving development of a database to support local pricing and configuration operations. When that project was successfully completed, Infosys began a second project to add functionality to Dell Japan's online store that had been running since March 1997. Infosys Custom Software Development Solutions are designed to cost-effectively meet the needs of companies supporting enterprise-wide software solutions. "We are pleased to provide Dell Japan with a staff that can effectively manage its application development requirements within compressed timeframes," said Phaneesh Murthy vice-president of worldwide operations for Infosys.
