Managing director of Ohmae and Associates and founder of Jasdic, Dr Kenichi Ohmae, has been quoted as saying that Jasdic is a software development house. And that it has been created to bridge the gap between the huge demand for software professionals and the lack of the right kind of skills in the Japanese market, especially those related to client-server and Internet technologies.

No Indian company has managed to succeed in Japan over a period as they have failed to develop long-term relationships.

"This is not an exclusive arrangement but a thrust-based arrangement,'' Ohmae said.

The joint venture would also look at the possibility of taking active part in Web conversion technologies and maintenance of large systems for Japanese companies.

Jasdic Park includes Satyam Computers, Infosys and DCM from India and the Japanese core group comprises NTT Leasing Company Limited, Duskin Company Limited and Fukuoka Clinical Pharmacy.

Each Indian company has taken 12.5 per cent of the equity totalling 37.50 per cent with the rest held by the management and employees as stock options.

Jasdic Park aims to bring together an understanding of Japanese culture, language, business practices and systems and help project the Japanese face for Indian companies.

Jasdic Park enables Indian companies to reach out to other Japanese companies and establish working relationships - interfacing, contracts and business process understanding.

Satyam Enterprise Solutions Managing Director Srini Raju has said the majority of the business Satyam plans to undertake in Japan would be through Jasdic Park but there is no bar on doing business with any other Japanese company independently.

"We are looking at the possibilities of working on telecom related opportunities, Internet solutions, e-commerce and ERP. We have already completed an year 2000 project on Japan's Fujitsu mainframe system,'' he said.

Jasdic Park President and COO Kiichiro Ohya sees a great potential for the joint venture through the Indian software companies. He said that there is a possibility of listing the company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange within the next two years.

Ohmae said, "Whatever we do in India will be through these three companies. All of them already have offshore development facilities. We are making our efforts to ensure that the true potential of software development is exploited and optimised, aimed at penetrating the Japanese business.''

"No Indian company, despite claims, has managed to penetrate the Japanese market. At the most, they have managed to bag a project and complete it but have failed to establish and continue a relationship with them for a long time. Our effort would be to ensure that the relationship lasts and we continue to support them and provide necessary software solutions,'' Ohmae said.

"In Japan there is a feeling that Japan has been left out far behind the US in the software development area. There is constant effort to develop skills in software development. Therefore, the role of Jasdic Park would be to expedite the process of software development in Japan and ensure long-term business development,'' Ohya said.
