TI India launches indigenous modem chips

These chips have been architectured, designed and developed entirely by engineers in the Mixed Signal Design Centre at TI India.

Announcing this at a press conference last week in Bangalore, Srini Rajam, managing director, TI India, said: "High resolution, data conversion, flexibility of design and reduction in power dissipation are benefits that accrue from these chips. These chips would find applications in modems, low-speed data communications such as ATMs, security systems, gaming and point-of-sale terminals, metering and embedded voice applications such as TV phone and feature phone.''

TI India will soon come up with a system solution for voice over Internet protocol. It is working with some companies and is in the process of getting the system ready.

TI is the first in India to complete 10 years of IC design and full chip analogue design.

Vivek Pawar, manager, Mixed Signal Products, has said that over a year's work has gone into designing these chips. One of the chips, code-named TLC320AD535, for instance, would be the first product in the world that combines two codecs on one chip. He said the additional features make them more optimised for data and voice. For voice features such as speakerphones and answering machines to be implemented, two codecs have to be supported with two different chips.
