Senior railway officials assured Action Force Chairman M S Ahluwalia that all their services would run normally on January 1.

Most of the critical railway equipment are Y2K compliant and steps are being taken to ensure that other systems run smoothly at the dawn of the next millennium, they said.

Special plans have been drawn up to integrate Y2K audit of the railways, telecommunications and power sectors for the Bombay and Calcutta suburban train services.

Similar audits have been planned for the other critical areas too, they claimed.

Major installations would be manned as a contingency measure only, they stressed.

Y2K complaint versions of operating system and application software have been tested successfully at Secunderabad.

Steps have already been taken to ensure Y2K compliance of the critical 'Passenger Reservation System', which handles about 650,000 transactions daily.

By October 1, the PRS network, comprising more than 500 centres, will become fully Y2K compliant.

The first reservation for the new millennium will be done 60 days before January 1, 2000, in November this year, they said.

However, contingency plans also have been drawn to use the railway communication lines, if necessary, in case of failure of DoT leased lines, a railway release quoted the officials as having said.

The officials said the equipment used for maintenance, including ultrasonic flaw detector machines for track maintenance and most of the machinery in manufacturing units and repair workshops are Y2K compliant.

Signalling systems, including solid-state interlocking systems at 12 stations, are also Y2K compliant.
