Defence ministry to be Y2K compliant by October-end

The Ministry of Defence will achieve total Y2K compliance by the end of October this year.

This was indicated in New Delhi today at a presentation made by the ministry on the status of Y2K preparedness of the defence sector to the members of the prime minister's taskforce on information technology.

Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, K C Pant and Dr M S Ahluwalia, chairman of the high-level action force on monitoring impact of Y2K problems in India were present at the review meeting.

The defence ministry says that a large number of embedded and application systems are operational in defence organisations. Impact analysis for most of these have been done, rectification carried out wherever necessary and simulation exercises undertaken to confirm that the units are Y2K compliant.

Internal and external audit of all organisations is also underway to further verify the work done.

Y2K compliance is expected to be achieved by the end of September this year in most of the organisations and total compliance would be achieved by all organisations by the end of October.

Appropriate plans are also being drawn up to meet possible contingencies. The high-level action force on monitoring the impact of Y2K problem in India has been regularly monitoring the status of preparedness of the various sectors of the economy including the states and private sector.

The task force is undertaking an in-depth review of the position in 11 critical sectors of power, telecom, defence, civil aviation, railways, petroleum, ports, banking, insurance, space and atomic energy.
