Quark is, at present, building its staff of software engineers, who will focus on client-server and desktop application development for products specific to the Indian market as well as global distribution. Quark will develop new products for Internet-centric enterprise commerce and direct marketing solutions and hopes that the staff in Chandigarh will continue to grow.

The Denver-based company develops and distributes publishing software for commercial publishing, graphic arts and multimedia production. Quark's products include QuarkXPress; QuarkXPress Passport, the multiple-language version of QuarkXPress; QuarkImmedia, professional design software for multimedia and Internet publishing; Quark Publishing System, the cross-platform solution for demanding collaborative workflow and Quark Digital Media System or QuarkDMS, for digital asset management.

The company was founded in 1981 and is privately held.

In a statement, Quark Media House (India) Private Limited President G B S Bindra said "Quark has discovered both the sales potential of its current products as well as the huge number of talented engineers and other professionals in India. We fully intend to pursue both sales and software development in this market and anticipate a very mutual benefit for Quark as well as the Indian economy."

By January, Quark plans to start selecting appropriate product resellers, addressing existing customer service issues and setting up an effective support network.

Quark plans to offer its products directly to Indian graphics and publishing professionals through reseller channels.

Quark's New Delhi office will control all issues related to sales, marketing, channel management and customer support for India as well as the entire SAARC region.

The New Delhi marketing effort will focus on three immediate areas: competitively pricing Quark software, creating wide product channels and establishing proactive customer support policies.

At present, Quark products are not distributed in India, but research shows the software is well known in the Indian electronic pre-press market.

According to Group Marketing Manager (India Operations) Raveesh Gupta "We want to begin offering our products at competitive prices and with all the benefits of purchasing software from the source. Customers can expect great technical support, customer service and new product offerings in a timely and consistent manner."

Quark will initially focus software distribution on QuarkXPress 4.04 International English, although other languages will also be available for Indian multinational companies. Quark will also begin marketing Quark Publishing System, its high-performance, server-based workgroup management software that provides page layout, word processing and file tracking capabilities for the collaborative workflow of publishing environments.

Other Quark products will be introduced in the market later.

There are over two million users within 290,000 companies in 100 countries who rely on Quark products to create, design and manage the production of their documents - from newspapers, magazines and books to catalogues, brochures, annual reports and packaging.
