JBS Cybertech piggybacks on technology parks

According to N K Nayak, managing director, JBS Cybertech, the company intends to lease out space to software and allied companies and also offer infrastructure facilities, such as access to uninterrupted power supply systems, communication facilities, canteen services, Internet, email and connectivity with satellite earth station through STP.

Nayak has been quoted as saying that owing to lack of space only 13 of the 28 operating STP units were located on the STP premises. The rest has been given the status of STP units although they operate from outside the STP.

In fact, the problem of space availability was first felt when Infosys Technologies and Satyam wanted to set up their software facilities in Bhubaneshwar.

"We realise that with the interest that has been generated, it is only a question of time before space availability fetches a premium. Besides, companies do not wish to waste time in setting up infrastructure facilities before they get down to actual business. We felt it would make business sense if we could offer software companies space along with the infrastructure facilities required by them.''

Several software companies wanted space between 1,000 and 3,000 square feet, Nayak said, adding most of these companies wanted to avoid the trouble of setting up the infrastructure required.

They are quite willing to entrust the task of infrastructure creation to any other agency, albeit for a price. In fact, several software companies from Calcutta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, the US and Belgium have evinced interest in availing the services offered by JBS Cybertech, he claimed.

Two companies had already taken up space in the complex and are slated to begin work on software development soon.

JBS Cybertech is confident of roping in around 15 companies within March 1999. With the STP deciding to restrict its activities to promotional work and providing the computing and communications infrastructure, the task of providing the physical infrastructure would be on companies like JBS Cybertech.

Nayak said besides providing the physical infrastructure for software companies, JBS Cybertech proposed to shortly embark on software exports. Firm orders have been received from companies in the US and Europe.

The emphasis would be on client server-based systems. The idea is to generate revenue of Rs 50 million from software exports within the next three years.
