Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had indicated that the government would adopt the same fast-track approach to its examination and adoption of this report on the hardware sector as was done in the case of the first report of the task force on software development.

Emphasising the need for realisation of global changes, especially integration of several sectors into information technology as a major area in recent years, Professor Menon said the task force has identified infrastructure for the IT sector and classified it into three areas - local, national and global.

Under this, by the yearend, the country would have fibre optic network of 75,000-route km with a growth rate of 30 per cent per annum.

The V-SAT facility would have the capacity of 3,000 MHz capacity supported by suitable transponders to cope with the demand.

The proposed conversion of public call offices in the country into public teleinformation centres and the target of $50 billion by 2008 from the sector are a few major goals for the task force.

Another major area the IT force is interested in is the development of software for communication in Indian languages, bar coding and security for the armed forces besides increasing the personal computer penetration from 1.4 to 5 per 100.
