CMC to supply fingerprint software to Mauritius police

The Mauritius police selected CMC for the job from among leading international companies specialising in the field.

CMC has won a similar order from the Tamil Nadu police.

CMC Executive Director, Systems Integration, S Kapoor has said that by bagging the order from the Mauritius police, the company has become the first Indian organisation to supply such a software overseas.

CMC expects to sell the product to Nepal and has applied to the international bid floated by Interpol.

Explaining the product, whose accuracy earned it an edge over other bidders for the Mauritius offer, Kapoor said the automatic fingerprinting identification software package was completely developed by CMC indigenously at its in-house Research and Development Centre in Hyderabad.

FACTS makes use of the latest advances in image processing, computational geometry and pattern recognition to trace fingerprints.

The system drastically cuts down on time consumed in the tracing of fingerprints from existing databases. The process of matching fingerprints, which could take days, weeks or even months, when done manually, can be carried out by FACTS in one to two hours.

In certain cases, it can be done even in a matter of minutes.

CMC has been working on FACTS for about 10 years. It came up with its first version in 1989, following a project entrusted to it by the Technology Development Committee of the Department of Electronics.

It later brought out two more versions before the current one. Comparable to any international system, the latest FACTS permits high-speed searches over millions of fingerprints.

The CMC system uses the latest image processing and pattern recognition techniques to capture, encode, store and match fingerprints (even latent or partial prints), automatically.

FACTS incorporates a criminal attribute database, thus integrating fingerprint data with the personal details of criminals.

Among the highlights of FACTS is that it eliminates the need for editing, except in the case of very poor quality fingerprints, thus minimising manual intervention and reducing the cost for backlog conversion of existing fingerprint slips.

It also provides a single algorithm for a chance print taken from the scene of crime spots and ten print matching. The fingerprint matching algorithms take care of all special cases, such as matching in the absence of clear features of the prints like patterns and delta.
