HCL Infosystems to target governments

As a part of the programme titled 'Infostructure', the company has launched a pilot project with the Delhi government.

According to Sharad Talwar, general manager (marketing), the company has begun to receive "encouraging feedback'' in its interactions with various state governments across the country.

Talwar said the company hopes to offer state governments comprehensive solutions for electronic fund transfer.

He said the benefits of implementing EFT in an area such as excise duty collections would pay back the government's investment many times over. Talwar pointed out that the current system of manual operations means there is a large time gap before governments are able to realise their Excise collections.

"In the Northeast for example, it takes even up to 140 days. The money is, meanwhile, in the float, and is of use to nobody,'' he said.

According to him, it has been estimated that a significant portion of government's budget deficits - if not the entire amount - could be wiped out if they shortened the time gap.

HCL Infosystems would rope in HCL-Deluxe, a group company, specialising in financial solutions to assist in the Infostructure programme, Talwar said.

Earlier this month, the company announced that it had recently bagged orders worth over Rs 130 million from various government- run organisations including C-DoT, MTNL, the union ministry of defence, Air-India, Andhra Pradesh Technology Services, MMTC and the Karnataka State Transport Corporation.

The company has reportedly also bagged a contract from the Delhi Transport Department to computerise the issue of driving licences.

HCL Infosystems, part of the HCL group, focuses on enterprise solutions and has direct customer service centres at 143 locations. The company has manufacturing facilities (for PC-based systems) at NOIDA and Pondicherry.
